Introducing Chip Technology: Making a secure payment system even more secure

How chip technology works

How to Use Your New CIBC VISA Card With Chip Technology

CIBC VISA Card Transactions

When conducting store purchases at a merchant where chip technology is available, instead of swiping your new chip-enabled CIBC VISA Card, you'll be asked to enter your PIN instead of signing a receipt; similar to how you use your debit card today. Your PIN identifies you as the rightful holder of your chip-enabled CIBC VISA Card, and it replaces your signature as the means of authorizing a card transaction. When using your chip-enabled CIBC VISA Card at a merchant terminal where chip technology is not yet available, you will be asked to provide your signature as you do today.

When making a transaction, you'll notice a number of minor differences compared to what you are used to with your current magnetic-stripe credit card. It will work like this:

  1. Your card will be inserted into the chip terminal
  2. Your card will remain inserted throughout the entire transaction
  3. Instead of authorizing the transaction with your signature, you will be asked to key-in your unique four-digit PIN
  4. Upon successful completion of your transaction, you'll receive a confirmation receipt; no signature required
