Health

CIBC contributes to organizations that support the health and well-being of Canadians.

DID YOU KNOW… a small group of committed CIBC employees in Victoria, BC - many touched by breast cancer themselves - inspired CIBC to become title sponsor of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. In 2009 over 13,000 employees, friends and family participated in the Run in 56 communities across Canada.

CIBC's flagship health program is the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure - the largest one-day fundraising event for breast cancer research in Canada. The commitment of its employees to this cause inspired CIBC to become the title sponsor of this event in 1997. Each year, thousands of CIBC employees, family and friends join Canadians all across the country in an effort to help create a future without breast cancer.

The Run raised $26.5 million in 2009, with CIBC employees raising close to $3 million of that total. Since its inception in 1986, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation has invested $170 million in breast cancer research, education and awareness programmes.

Further contributions to the health of Canadians include multi-year commitments of more than $19 million to hospitals and health research facilities. Many of CIBC's contributions in this area fund the research and treatment of breast cancer.

Here are just a few other examples of the health related organizations that CIBC supports:

The Tour CIBC Charles Bruneau is a 600 km, four-day bicycle ride across the province of Quebec that raises funds for children with cancer. CIBC is the title sponsor and in 2009 our employees and clients contributed $250,000 to the Tour, which raised $1,025,000.

BC Children's Hospital is one of North America's leading pediatric hospitals and largest full service child health centre. CIBC employees throughout BC and parts of the Northern Territories raised over $415,000 during the 2008 BC Children's Hospital Fundraising Campaign. Since 1995, CIBC employees and clients have raised more than $3.7 million for BC Children's Hospital Foundation. In addition to our employees' commitment to BC Children's Hospital, CIBC has made corporate contributions over the years totaling more than $1.2 million.

Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) is the representative voice of the childhood cancer community. POGO works to ensure that all of Ontario's children have equal access to state-of-the-art diagnosis, treatment and required ancillary services for the greatest prospects for survival with an optimal quality of life.

William Dennis Chair in Pediatric Epilepsy Research is the first of its kind in Canada. Located in the Department of Pediatrics at the IWK Health Centre, the Chair builds on internationally renowned epilepsy research efforts at Dalhousie Medical School and IWK. CIBC donated $250,000 towards its creation, which will shed light on the nature, causes and cures of epilepsy, while providing an opportunity to educate the public and reduce stigma associated with this neurological disorder.
