Environmental performance indicators

In an effort to measure both our environmental impacts and operational efficiency, CIBC has put systems into place to manage, analyze and report on a growing list of environmental performance data. Our goal is to continually improve our tracking of indicators that we have identified as significant aspects of our business. We also seek input from stakeholder groups and assess global best practices to determine other relevant environmental performance indicators.

CIBC has been a constituent of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for 5 consecutive years, and we have steadily increased our environmental score.

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a collaboration among institutional investors to question companies about the business implications of climate change. CIBC has been a respondent to all of the CDPs information requests and, since 2005, CIBC has been a signatory to the CDP information requests as well as a respondent. In 2006, CIBC was pleased to receive one of the highest scores of all North American banks on the CDP4 for awareness and disclosure of climate change risks and opportunities.

"CIBC has recognized the need for conservation and sustainable development of Canada's boreal forest. We applaud CIBC's leadership and willingness to work with a wide range of stakeholders to understand environmental risks while seeking opportunities to adapt business practices accordingly. The future of Canada's boreal forest depends on such constructive and innovative attitude from all sectors."
Larry Innes, Acting Director, Canadian Boreal Initiative, as stated in the 2006 CIBC Annual Accountability Report

"CIBC's environmental policies and practices are advanced relative to those of other North American banks, addressing both direct and indirect risks as well as opportunities. New programs, including the carbon risk portfolio review, demonstrate CIBC's efforts at continuous improvement and its awareness of the financial sector's potential role in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions."
Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, as stated in the 2005 CIBC Annual Accountability Report
