What was the inspiration behind this work?

This piece for Pearson is inspired by these messages exchanged, how they travel across the world and connect different cultures together. The painting portrays a connection between the boy and girl; even though they are on opposite sides of the world, the messages exchanged represent true freedom without limitations. Whatever each message the paper plane holds inside, a different memory and thought is shared that connects different people from different countries. The scene inspires new friendships and relationships no matter how far apart each country may seem.

How has travel affected your life and your art?

Much of my inspiration comes from stories around the world, especially since much of my work revolves around mythology and fantasy. Sometimes I become inspired by personally exploring different countries. Other times, I become inspired by places from the connections I’ve made with customers commissioning me from other nations. One of my favorite things to do is to write thank-you notes to these individuals, whom I become friends with sometimes after exchanging messages. I feel so fortunate to be able to communicate with individuals residing in places I’ve never visited before, such as Australia, Russia, Germany and Singapore. They share with me experiences of their cultures and the adventures they’ve been on, and I do the same. One year I ventured on a trip to Japan on a whim just because a customer I was conversing with described how wonderful their country was.

What are your travel ambitions for the future?

I have huge plans to travel in the future! I've been to 15 countries so far, and I know I’ve only scratched the surface. I love immersing myself into each country’s culture and history. It helps with my artist inspiration, being able to understand how art is made all around the world and what stories inspired it.
