Making new friends in Canada

Starting a new chapter in your life comes with lots of change. Making connections in a new country can seem hard, but don’t fret. We’ve got some suggestions for you to start making social connections right away.

Making friends with your neighbours is one of the best ways to quickly feel more settled in Canada. As you’re likely to spend most of your time in your new neighbourhood, when you've first arrived, make sure to introduce yourself to your neighbours and start conversations. Some great ways to build relationships in your community are:

• Joining any social groups or committees your neighbourhood might offer

You can contribute to your new community and build a sense of belonging to your new home at the same time.

Joining organizations or groups that focus on particular interests or activities is a terrific way to meet people who share your interests. It helps to form lasting friendships with people who have the same hobbies and interests as you. You can explore a range of clubs depending on your specific interests, including fitness, sports, hiking, music, riding and community involvement. There are various clubs and societies in every Canadian city and many smaller communities nationwide.

Networking events can help you expand your professional circle give you the opportunity to meet like-minded people. This is a great way for you to develop relationships and get advice on your career at the same time.

When you arrive in Canada, taking a language class to learn English or French, the official languages of Canada, provides opportunities to:

Places of worship offer a fantastic way to meet others who share your beliefs and expand your social circle. Most places of worship have volunteering programs and always encourage members of the community to join. Being part of places of worship can help you overcome some elements of culture shock you might experience as someone new to Canada.
