I became a mentor initially because people reached out to me and I related to their stories. Many were newcomers looking for advice, or young Black students wondering how I got into capital markets. I became invested in mentorship programs like Drive for Dreams, ASPIRE and Women in Capital Markets programs because I noticed how different the experience is for young Black people here than my experience.
Growing up in Jamaica, I always saw myself represented in leaders and senior professionals. I didn’t grow up with any insecurities about who I am or the colour of my skin. That’s how I operate when I’m in Canada too, but a young person from the Black community in school faces challenges I never had to. I want to show them the confidence they deserve to have when they walk into a room.
When Tim and Barrie started their utility contracting business, they never thought that it would grow so quickly. Today their financial needs are more complex, but CIBC is on their team to help.
