Learning new skills, building independence and making friends is so important to a child’s development. Ten-year-old Jacoby’s family wants this for their son just like his peers. Finding programs and activities that are inclusive of his abilities while still fostering developmental skills has always been a challenge.

“Since Jacoby started with the LIFE program, we’ve seen an increase in his social skills, along with the ability to handle situations he hasn’t been used to before,” shares Jacoby’s mom, Vanessa. “He’s made new friends and enjoys being around everyone. The program is so valuable and allows him to be like everyone else! LIFE takes the time to schedule events to meet everyone’s abilities and we love being a part of this group!”
Offered through the Rehabilitation Centre for Children in Winnipeg, the LIFE programs provide recreational opportunities for children living with disabilities, including summer day camps, music therapy, the Saturday Night for Teens club, art therapy, cooking clubs and more.
Jacoby was first introduced to LIFE’s Fun and Sun Summer camp in 2020 and now participates in as many of the LIFE activities as he can. He loves trying new things like bocce, Zumba and yoga. The activities are adapted so he can participate as fully as his abilities allow.
Koby, another LIFE participant, is at the end of his time with LIFE programs as he is now 21, the upper limit for participation. He took part in Saturday Night for Teens for many years and loved socializing with his peers. Maintaining friends at school was hard for Koby because they grew up and moved on as they became adults, so Koby really enjoyed seeing familiar faces each week and his family says that was very comforting for him to be with staff and peers.
“He really felt included and like he found his place,” Koby’s mom, Nadine, shared. “He has no siblings, but he has me, his grandparents and my friends who adore him and spoil him. He really is such a kind, thoughtful well-behaved kid. I really hit the jackpot with this one!”
Even though Koby is moving on from the program, the life skills he has gained are invaluable as he moves forward.
