If a brightly painted front door framed neatly by potted plants has ever caught your eye, you've seen the impact curb appeal can have. Those nice touches that passers-by admire do more than make a home look inviting and well-maintained. You can actually add value to your property with some small improvements.
If you're thinking of renovating, you're not alone. A recent CIBC poll found that about one in three Canadians are making home improvements a priority this year. While renovations can be extensive and expensive, there are affordable ways to refresh the look of your home. Even if you're not thinking about selling any time soon, living in an attractive home always has its own rewards.
1. Start with a clean sweep
If you were getting ready for a night out, you'd probably start with a long, hot shower. Similarly, you can get your house ready by starting with a thorough cleaning of the exterior. Wash all windows inside and out, including for those in the garage and other outbuildings. Get rid of the cobwebs from beneath the eaves and remove last year's leaves from the gutters before pressure washing your siding. You'll be surprised at how fresh your house can look without repainting it.
2. Give your yard a manicure
Think of your front yard as your home's welcome mat. It doesn't have to be fancy, but it should be clean and inviting. You can begin with some simple yard maintenance, like weeding, mowing and tree pruning. Keep the edges where grass meets sidewalks, driveways and planting beds tidy. Consider investing in nice planters to fill with cheerful flowers or fragrant herbs. Finally, consider installing patio stones or concrete pavers to create pretty garden paths. If you have an existing walkway, add an arbour and put climbing plants, like clematises, roses or sweet peas, next to it. It will make a magical impression and create a focal point.
3. Create enticing entryways
Aside from the appeal of a brightly painted front door, there are other low-investment upgrades to your doorways worth pondering. Make sure the area is clear of clutter and put out a fresh welcome mat. Potted plants or flower boxes add colour and texture. Elevate your entryway with an attractive door knocker, an all-season wreath, a decorative mail slot or mailbox and eye-catching house numbers. Make sure you select items in finishes and styles that complement each other.
4. Max out your porch and patio
Designing and building outdoor spaces can be costly, but there are affordable ways to maximize what you already have. Whether your home has a patio, porch, or even a Juliet balcony, look at the space as you would an interior room. Consider your design aesthetic and choose pieces that look great together and make the space functional. Don't overload small areas with too many items. Instead, select a few statement pieces for a more pleasing effect. Elevate the space with practical details, like weatherproof throw pillows, a colourful outdoor carpet, or a stylish sunshade.
With the suggestions above, your home and yard will be looking great, at least during the day. Lighting is the perfect decor detail that makes a look come together and can make a big difference. Make sure your porch is well-lit with attractive fixtures to illuminate the space adequately. Add alternatives like string lights, tube lights, or even tabletop candles to patios and porches. If you have a pathway in your yard, consider well-spaced lamps or solar stakes to boost visibility and appeal.
Upgrades are always a good idea, but you'll want to keep personal touches to a minimum, especially if you're looking to sell. Aim for a clean, stylish and inviting look.
You may be able to tackle minor renovations on your own. Between your sweat equity and a modest budget, your home will take its place among the best on the block.
